Olympique de Marseille face the threat of a points deduction for the 2027-2028 season due to financial non-compliance. France's National Directorate for Financial Control (DNCG) is considering provisional sanctions against the club this winter for failing to meet requirements set last June.

Financial and sporting penalties are on the table if the club's management cannot put its finances in order by 30 June 2027. The DNCG, the national authority overseeing French clubs' finances, is imposing strict oversight. Precautionary measures could be applied as early as the coming winter transfer window.

Points deduction a possible penalty

A points deduction taking effect in the 2027-2028 campaign is a potential sanction. This would be triggered if Marseille does not resolve its financial issues by the set deadline at the end of June 2027. Administrative relegation to Ligue 2 is not currently among the penalties under consideration.

The report references a similar provisional measure taken against rivals Olympique Lyonnais in November 2025. Marseille currently sit 13th in Ligue 1 after the first six matchdays of the season.

Limited options to ease pressure

Marseille's financial constraints are severe. The club had a recruitment-free summer transfer window and is unlikely to strengthen its squad during the upcoming winter window. Sales of selected players have been cited as one of the few ways to ease the financial restrictions imposed by the DNCG.

The warning comes as the club prepares for a challenging period with limited funds to meet the regulator's demands. The situation raises significant concerns about their ability to comply by the summer deadline.

FC Halifax Town's next fixture is away at Southend United on Saturday, 24 October.
